Education & Charities

Our education and charities team provides or has provided legal services to over 700 independent schools out of a possible total of 1200 independent schools in the UK

Work experience/case studies:

  • Advising on the Wiltshire Schools PFI scheme including issues arising from changes in form, scope, changes in financial sources, changes in timetables, additional services, grounds for negotiated route, procurement of complex framework arrangements and decision as to withdrawal and recommencement.
  • We are the retained solicitors of the City Academy Bristol (Bristol 1) and advised as to its establishment and development. We also act for the sponsors and project managers of the proposed Merchants’ Academy Withywood (Bristol 2) and a partner in our Schools Team sits on the Project Board for the new Academy proposed on the site of Hengrove Community Arts College (Bristol 3). In addition, we have recently been selected to advise on the conversion of John Cabot City Technology College into a City Academy.
  • Advising University of Bristol in respect of the Avon Local Investment Finance Trusts ("LIFT") contract in connection with the redevelopment of Hampton House which was formerly a University Hall of Residence. The project is to provide new facilities for the University Student Health Service as well as new offices for the local PCT and a pharmacy. The proposal involved the University taking a "Lease Plus" Agreement of the ground floor of the building to enable it to provide Student Health Care facilities. As a result, we were involved in a review and negotiation of the documentation. In addition our legal services to medical partnerships have included advice to parties on the introduction of (LIFT) in other areas of the country.
