Partnerships

The team has, for many years, advised professional partnerships on a wide variety of traditional partnership issues including the terms of partnership agreements, practice redevelopment and disputes between partners. Our team has a particular track record of advising GP and dental practices.

However, in the last twelve months the team has also been called to advise on a developing area of professional practice work - namely the emergence of third party investment in GP and dental practices. The team has been heavily involved in advising investors on the structure and terms of their investment in numerous GP and dentist practices.

A recent partial deregulation has allowed corporate bodies to own dental practices. This has enabled a number of investors in the commercial dentistry field not only to provide support services to dental practices, but to share in the profits that the provision of those services leads to.Veale Wasbrough has advised on the structure of these deals and has already assisted in bringing a number of such investments to completion.

Veale Wasbrough has also advised groupings of GP Practices on how best to offer provision of enhanced medical services in advanced contractual configurations. This is an area which is likely to boom in coming years as commercial organisations increasingly seek to become involved in the provision of healthcare.

Our chairman, Derek Bellew, advises and acts for a range of professional partnerships.

Derek has a national reputation for the advice and work he has carried out for medical practices in particular. Derek has lectured widely on subjects affecting GPs for about 15 years and has been invited to contribute to a number of periodicals including Medeconomics who commissioned him to write an editorial on the goodwill rules. He also contributed to six programmes in the Money Matters series on the Medical Channel.

Other bodies such as Avon LMC and other health authorities have also invited Derek to give lectures on relevant issues affecting, in particular, surgery development and practice based commissioning.

Derek has been a main speaker at national conferences of the specialist medical sub-group of the Institute of Chartered Accountants.
